Here's Looking at You Curriculum Training Workshop

One out of every four students is living in a home where alcohol and other drugs are a problem. In addition, one out of three 6th graders in the Puget Sound region have used at least one substance themselves! This training will provide instruction and interactive learning activities to explore the conditions that increase a students risk of using substances and how you can help create conditions that support students to remain drug-free. The Heres Looking at You (HLAY) curriculum helps students gain the knowledge and skills necessary to make healthy life choices. This workshop will review the updated K-12 HLAY, including methods for integrating the program into subject areas and the EALRs. Arts Infused Workshop: Visual Arts and Math

PSESD Arts Impact program is offering a workshop that provides K-6 teachers with strategies to infuse the arts into Math. Using various media and visual art techniques, the workshop presents strategies to introduce, present, or reinforce visual art and math infused concepts. Each workshop produces works of art to serve as a model for the lessons back in the classroom. Performance based assessments are modeled and included with each lesson. The workshop presenter models and leads criteria based reflection of completed artwork. Each lesson is supported by examples of artwork from Tacoma Art Museum and/or Seattle Art Museum permanent collections. Art materials for the workshop are provided.

Strategies for Success with English Language Learners

What are best practices for simultaneously increasing the English language proficiency and academic achievement of English learners? How can ESL and mainstream teachers work together to make this happen? How can grade-level academic standards (expectations) be used to get this work done?

Specific outcomes of this interactive workshop include:

  • The development of a professional knowledge base on linguistic and cultural issues related to teaching English learners in K-12 settings;
  • An understanding of programs, options and curricula models;
  • How to use time-honored ESL strategies to develop language proficiency for beginners;
  • How to use vocabulary, reading and writing tools to increase academic language literacy skills;

Formative Assessment Strategies for Every Classroom

Its true that classroom formative assessment, if appropriately used, can yield dramatic improvements in students learning. Yet few educators really understand what formative assessment is and what it isnt. Meaningful Mathematics: Leading Students Toward Understanding and Application

This electronic version of the ETS Paraprofessional Assessment is one of the options for individuals to meet the No Child Left Behind Title I Paraeducator Requirement. The assessment consists of 90 multiple choice questions, 30 in each of the following subjects: reading, writing, and math. The test will be administered online in the computer lab at Renton School District's Kohlwes Education Center. No test taker will be admitted after online access has begun. Documenting the Power of Learning through Technology and the Arts

Helping others grasp what students have learned through arts-integrated instruction is complex and challenging. Rarely does the product alone communicate the students learning process or their depth of understanding.

In this workshop, examine effective ways to use readily-available technologies to help document the multifaceted nature of student learning through arts integration. Explore multiple methods for capturing arts-integrated instruction and student learning; and consider ways to align them to the needs of various constituencies, such as school administrators and families.

This will be a hands-on session, and participants will leave with practical strategies and techniques to put into use immediately.
