Autism and Severe Disabilities: Structured Teaching - Developing Skills and Independence

Strategies for Success with English Language Learners

Attend this dynamic series with Virginia Rojas, an ASCD faculty member and private consultant in the area of English as a second language. She works in schools around the globe and in districts throughout the United States. Participants at this institute interactively answer these and other provocative questions.What are best practices for simultaneously increasing the English language proficiency and academic achievement of English learners? How can ELL and mainstream teachers work together to make this happen? How can grade-level academic standards (expectations) be used to get this work done?

Specific outcomes of this interactive workshop include:

  • the development of a professional knowledge base on linguistic and cultural issues related to teaching English learners in K-12 settings;
  • an understanding of program, options and curricula models;
  • how to use time-honored ELL strategies to develop language proficiency for beginners;

Response to Intervention (RTI) Secondary Cohort Training

Response to Instruction/Intervention (RTI) training is designed to help schools establish and improve their system of supports for all students. This core training addresses the major ideas associated with RTI and emphasizes considerations for applying it at the secondary level.

Topics included are:

  • Establishing a school-wide (tiered) approach at the secondary level to meet the needs of all students, including students with basic skill and motivational deficits.
  • Use of assessment for the purpose of universal screening, identifying and confirming skill deficits, diagnostic measurement - identifying instructional priorities and needs, progress monitoring - evaluate the effectiveness of interventions, and predicting long-term summative outcomes.
  • Evaluating and addressing school culture/climate concerns.

Special Education Directors Seminar

Special education directors and school administrators are invited to a workshop that will focus on preventing and reducing special education claims and litigation. The majority of all special education claims are a result of districts committing the same missteps. This program will highlight those errors and provide you with the tools to eliminate them from your programs. Chris Hirst, attorney for K & L Gates will present the Administrators Tool Kit and also discuss how you can write a defensible IEP and make applications for Safety Net. Bill Coats, attorney for Vandeburg, Johnson & Gandara will discuss recent changes in special education laws and analyze actual special education claims, pointing out what went wrong and what to do to avoid falling prey to the same issues.

Federal Employment Laws: Update & Changes

IT Infrastructure Library® (ITIL) Overview Workshop

The IT Infrastructure Library® (ITIL) is the most widely accepted approach to IT service management in the world. ITIL is a best practice framework that has been drawn from both the public and private sectors internationally. It describes how IT resources should be organized to deliver business value, documenting the processes, functions and roles of IT Service Management (ITSM).
