Math Leadership Academy

Save the Date: April 25 & 26, 2008; 9:00 - 3:00, at Puget Sound ESD

The question of how to meet the needs of students who are struggling in mathematics is one which is both critical and time sensitive. This academy brings together national and state instructional leaders to provide answers and strategies that will help us:

  • Understand research-based math instruction
  • Use math coaches effectively
  • Develop instructional leadership in math
  • Use continuous progress monitoring to inform instruction
  • Evaluate and select math intervention programs.

This workshop is designed for administrators, curriculum directors and math coaches and features several guest speakers:

  • Dr. Russell Gersten, member of the National Math Panel and Executive Director of the Instructional Research Group, Long Beach, California
  • Dr. Ronni Ephraim, Deputy Superintendent of Professional Development, Los Angeles Unified School District
  • Dr. John Sylvester, Professor of Mathematics, University of Washington

In addition, breakout sessions will be held in the following areas:

  • Progress Monitoring with Dr. Leanne Ketterlin Geller from the University of Oregon
  • Evaluating and Selecting Math Intervention Programs with Dr. Diane Kinder of the University of Washington, Tacoma

Arts Impact Workshops

The PSESD Arts Impact program is offering three workshop series that provide K-6 teachers with strategies to infuse the arts into math and writing. Arts Impact has been actively involved both past and present in research and development of arts-infused learning curriculum. Arts-infusion is defined as shared concepts between an arts discipline and another core content area. For example, symmetry is shared by both visual arts and math; character is a concept shared by theater and writing; and pattern is shared by dance and math. Students act, dance, paint, and draw while reinforcing concepts in math and literacy.

Arts infusion provides students who struggle to learn in traditional ways with an opportunity to learn those same concepts from an artistic point of view. Arts-infused strategies have been shown to be effective with students who have difficulty learning in traditional ways, have learning disabilities, or are English Language Learners.

The three, 11-hour series are Theater/Writing; Dance/Math; and Visual Arts/Math. The first workshop in each series lays the groundwork for approaching arts-infused teaching. Teachers view learning using a Mastery Arc that provides a framework to create bridges for students, helping them to move back and forth between arts-centered learning and traditional pencil paper learning, until the student is able to master the concept and apply it in different contexts. Teachers mine for shared concepts, imagine possibilities for instruction, and participate in an arts-infused lesson.

The second and third workshops in each series provide hands-on instruction in arts-infused lessons taught by Arts Impact Artist Mentors. The lessons are ready for classroom use. The lessons provide clearly defined targets, criteria, teaching and classroom management strategies, and specific connections to the state standards in the both content areas – dance/math, visual art/math, or theater/writing.   Recommended for K-6 classroom teachers or specialists.

You must sign up for all three workshops in a series.

2008 Regional High School Art Show

Puget Sound ESD's annual high school art competition encourages students to share their work with other students in the PSESD region and Washington state to emphasize the role of the arts as a core subject area. The competition is open to students enrolled in grades 9-12 in any public or state-approved private school in the ESD region. Students enter their artwork at the regional level, with several pieces chosen to compete at the state level. Artwork is judged on creativity, composition, and technique.

Artwork will be on display to the public at PSESD in Renton from March 24th through April 13th. Winners will be honored at the April 13th Awards Reception from 2:00-4:30. The state show awards reception will take place in Olympia on May 16th. Artwork will also be viewable on psesd.org beginning March 24th.
