Closing the academic achievement gap of English Language Learners has become a national priority emphasized in Title III of No Child Left Behind. This dynamic and interactive three-day workshop will provide educators with the opportunity to address the content and language needs of their second language speaking students in order to address this academic disparity.  Participants will receive intensive training in SIOP (Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol). Strategies for effective teaching and application of the model to individual instructional environments will be emphasized.

Mediating Thinking in Math: Bringing Students to Standard

Participants will learn and practice techniques to mediate thinking in mathematics, deepen understanding about the importance of metacognition in problem-solving, and acquire questioning strategies to improve student performance in mathematics.

  • To internalize an understanding of the content and process strands of math.
  • To learn techniques for teaching math concepts.
  • To develop repertoire in using questioning strategies to mediate thinking.
  • To learn protocols for strengthening lessons, improving instruction, and supporting student performance.

Reader's Workshop

Learn to use the Reader's Workshop approach in which thinking skills are emphasized to develop reading comprehension. Reader's Workshop provides an opportunity for all students to self-select materials at their instructional level in order to learn the skills and strategies of successful readers as outlined in the Reading EALRs. While the overall goal is to instill a love of reading, the Reader's Workshop approach allows the teacher to individualize reading instruction through conferences, literature circles, response journals, book projects, and skill lessons focusing on vocabulary and reading comprehension strategies. A variety of assessments will be modeled. Participants will engage in a simulated reader's workshop and will self-select a reader's workshop book to use in their classrooms.

Ready, Set, Goals 1-4 Conference: The Heart of Education

This electronic version of the ETS Paraprofessional Assessment is one of the options for individuals to meet the No Child Left Behind Title I Paraeducator Requirement. The assessment consists of 90 multiple choice questions, 30 in each of the following subjects: reading, writing, and math. The test will be administered online in the computer lab at Renton School District's Kohlwes Education Center. No test taker will be admitted after online access has begun. Individuals must score 461 or higher to pass the assessment.

Photoshop Elements is a less-expensive, easier-to-use version of the professional Photoshop program. Discover how you can use this exciting image-editing software to transform your scanned or digital photographs into dazzling images, and explore activities that will excite and challenge your students. This workshop will cover a variety of ways to manipulate images through image adjustments, selection tools, basic layers, filters, text, layer styles, adjustment layers, and more.  Participants will then explore and develop projects that take advantage of this software, including creating classroom materials, how to make custom graphics from scratch, PowerPoint templates, and simple animations. Adobe's Creative Suite allows educators to enliven lessons and materials in all of their classes. Communicating by Design

This self-paced class will introduce you to Adobe Illustrator, the foremost vector graphics drawing program. This overview will help you understand when and how to use this program to create high-quality text and graphics required for printed materials. Illustrator has a somewhat steep learning curve, so there will be ample time to work on projects, make mistakes and learn from them, and further explore the program. There is something for everyone in this class!

Puget Sound ESD and NCCE have partnered again to offer the Digital Photography Bootcamp at the Pack Forest Conference Center, located near Mt. Rainier. This beautiful setting will be used for a fun and informative program that gives you a chance to learn how to use your digital camera to its potential in education (and for your personal use too). Sessions will include hands-on computer lab time and extensive practice taking photographs at Pack Forest and in Mt. Rainier National Park. Topics covered: get to know your camera's settings and special functions; explore concepts unique to digital photography including resolution and file size; become familiar with the endless possibilities of Photoshop Elements and other programs; download, enhance, retouch, crop, remove red eye, and print your images; learn how to create slide shows and movies from your pictures; discover how digital images can enhance your classroom; and most of all, have fun! We hope you can join us for three days and two nights of digital photography exploration this summer!

Our Digital Photography Bootcamp has been so popular, we created Intermediate Digital Photography Bootcamp for returning and experienced participants! Join us for three days and two nights of continued digital photography exploration at scenic Pack Forest and Mt. Rainier National Park, where we will use these beautiful settings to extend the experiences of Bootcamp I and continue our exploration into the world of digital photography. Learn more about your camera's manual settings and special functions; practice the rules of image composition through hikes at camp and Mt. Rainier; and see how to share your images online, create slide shows, and use them in digital storytelling. And most of all, have fun!

This self-paced class has something for everyone. It will cover all you need to know to start publishing on the web, including the basics for Adobe Dreamweaver, Flash, Fireworks, and Photoshop/Photoshop Elements. This class will utilize a series of self-paced online lessons, combined with one-on-one teacher interaction and group discussion. All participants will leave with a basic new web site and a CD of the online lessons to use with their students or as a refresher for themselves.

This course is part of the T3-Train the Teachers Project, supported by a generous grant from the Adobe Foundation Fund and Community Foundation Silicon Valley.

Library Leadership and Information Literacy Institute (LLILI)

This year's institute focuses on encouraging advocacy and welcoming change. As technology reshapes the role of information specialists and teacher librarians, the need to upgrade skills and respond to change has increased dramatically. Podcasting: A New, Cool, Fun Technology

Due to the positive feedback from participants of the last class, this workshop has been extended to two days of learning. Audio and video blogs are becoming more and more popular. Learn how to create and use podcasting to motivate your students in an exciting new way. We will cover everything you need to produce your own podcast; including equipment, step-by-step directions, and educational uses for podcasts. Hands-on time will be given for you to create an audio program.

LOL: Learning about Online Learning

Online learning programs are being implemented by many districts in Washington state, using a variety of models.  This program is intended to provide an opportunity for practitioners to hear what is happening around the state, what OSPI is proposing as the definition of online learning in the revised state technology plan, current and upcoming polices to be aware of, and to exchange ideas and experiences with their peers.

WebQuest Adventure

A WebQuest is an inquiry-based activity designed to guide the user through resources available on the web.  WebQuests are created to make better use of students' time by focusing their efforts on examining information rather than searching for it. This activity is also developed to stretch learners' thinking at the levels of analysis, synthesis and evaluation. On day one, you will study all the elements that make up a WebQuests and explore examples on the Internet. In the second session, you will examine the physical design of a WebQuest including layout, font families, color, photos and graphics. Finally, you will develop a WebQuest for your classroom.
