Student Success Through Effective Collaboration: ESA Part II

How Internet Games and Virtual Worlds Can Help You Deliver a More Global Education

We know that our middle and high school students are already playing plenty of online games.* But, do internet-based games always mean wasted time and mushy brains? In this class, we will take a look at online games and virtual worlds within the context of global/international education. Participants will try out some fun, educational, free, online games designed to teach about global topics from the poverty cycle to preventing malaria to what its like to be a refugee. Next we’ll jump into the 3-D virtual world of Second Life to see why and how educators around the world are using virtual worlds to bring students together in international learning communities.

Mediating Thinking in Math: Bringing Students to Standard

Reader's Workshop

Participants will learn to use a Reader’s Workshop approach in which thinking skills are emphasized to develop reading comprehension. Reader’s Workshop provides an opportunity for all students to self-select materials at their instructional level in order to learn the skills and strategies of successful readers as outlined in the Reading EALRs. While the overall goal is to instill a love of reading, the Reader’s Workshop approach allows the teacher to individualize reading instruction through conferences, literature circles, response journals, book projects, and skill lessons focusing on vocabulary and reading comprehension strategies. A variety of assessments will be modeled. Participants will engage in a simulated reader’s workshop and will self-select a reader’s workshop book to use in their classrooms.

Elementary Science Summer Institute: Understanding Energy and Matter

This week long summer institute is designed specifically for elementary teachers (K-5) with a non-science background. The focus of this years institute will be to increase teacher understanding of energy and matter concepts as well as to extend teacher understanding of inquiry, systems, and the nature of science. Participants will be immersed in a variety of learning and assessment experiences where preconceptions are uncovered, ideas are discussed using evidence, and scientific concepts are made relevant. While the focus of this institute is on content, the instruction delivered will model effective and engaging strategies in science teaching, learning, and assessment. Strategies for Success with English Language Learners

Attend this dynamic series with Virginia Rojas, an ASCD faculty member and private consultant in the area of English as a second language. She works in schools around the globe and in districts throughout the United States. Participants at this institute interactively answer these and other provocative questions.What are best practices for simultaneously increasing the English language proficiency and academic achievement of English learners? How can ELL and mainstream teachers work together to make this happen? How can grade-level academic standards (expectations) be used to get this work done?

Puget Sound ESD and NCCE have partnered again to offer the Digital Photography Bootcamp at the Pack Forest Conference Center, located near Mt. Rainier. T3: Digital Storytelling in the Classroom with Adobe Photoshop and Premiere Elements

T3: Digital Literacy Institute - Print Projects with InDesign & Photoshop CS4

Adobe’s family of products called Creative Suite allows educators to enliven lessons and materials in all of their classes. Two of these products (Photoshop and InDesign) integrate for print production, enabling educators to produce sophisticated magazine and newspaper layouts, as well as newsletters, brochures, flyers, mailers, yearbooks, and any other type of document.

In this two-week, project-based workshop, participants will learn the basics of how these applications work together to produce dynamic publications. Participants will explore ideas for use with students in the classroom and be able to focus on developing their own projects to take back to their classrooms. Your business cards, newsletters, posters, bookmarks, postcards, charts, reports, and presentations will look more professional, organized, and unified. PowerPoint and Word software will be used for class projects.
  • Thursday - Session 3: Creative Photo Fun, by Barb Bumgardner Putting to use all of the concepts you've learned in the preceding two sessions, Barb will show you how easy it is to use your digital photos to create cards, collages, calendars and other "photo phantastic" projects for school or home. Personalize your projects as you learn how to design a book, create a multimedia DVD, and share your photos online.

Digital storytelling is the practice of using digital media including slide shows, narration and soundtracks to create exciting and meaningful reports and stories. Using widely available software such as PowerPoint or Photostory 3, students can engage in creating powerful projects that support standards from many different content areas while developing 21st century skills. Enhance Your Teaching With Moodle

Moodle is a virtual learning environment that can be used in a variety of ways to support and enhance instructional practices in your classroom. Moodle, which stands for “modular object-oriented dynamic learning environment,” enables educators to manage all aspects of course content and delivery using one integrated system.

This hands-on workshop will allow you to take Moodle for a test drive and get started on creating your own Moodle site. You will learn how to create an online classroom, upload files, set up calendars, and include podcasts and video. Come prepared with files (Word, Excel, etc) to upload to Moodle.

Online Learning Leadership Summit
