Registration Deadline: December 2, 2008

It's true that classroom formative assessment, if appropriately used, can yield dramatic improvements in students learning. Yet few educators really understand what formative assessment is and what it isn't. This three-day professional development experience will guide teachers in the exploration and application of formative assessment. Teachers will be assigned follow-up study and classroom implementation activities to support in-depth learning. This experience will help teachers to:

  1. Understand the nature of classroom formative assessment and how it helps teachers to determine students learning needs and adjust instruction to improve learning,
  2. Identify the key steps underlying the implementation of four distinctive levels of classroom formative assessment,
  3. Provide practical strategies to identify and effectively address what each student knows and can do and how they learn,
  4. Explore tools to transform existing assessment practices into structures that both inform instruction and curricular decisions, and
  5. Learn how to organize a professional learning community that addresses formative assessment.

Documenting the Power of Learning through Technology and the Arts
January 24, 2009; 8:30-3:30
Registration Deadline: January 22, 2009
PSESD #: TM8924
Helping others grasp what students have learned through arts-integrated instruction is complex and challenging. Rarely does the product alone communicate the students’ learning process or their depth of understanding.

In this workshop, examine effective ways to use readily-available technologies to help document the multifaceted nature of student learning through arts integration. Explore multiple methods for capturing arts-integrated instruction and student learning; and consider ways to align them to the needs of various constituencies, such as school administrators and families.

This will be a hands-on session, and participants will leave with practical strategies and techniques to put into use immediately.
