Reading First Series

January 14 & 28, February 11, 2010; 4:00-7:00
Registration Deadline: December 31, 2009
PSESD #: SD9RF
Reading First is a series of sessions for K-12 teachers, coaches and paraprofessionals designed to enhance their literacy knowledge and expand their repertoire of strategies to support young readers.

January 14 - Session 1: Informal Diagnostic Decoding Survey
Look in-depth at the Diagnostic Decoding Survey developed by Linda Farrell and Michael Hunter and learn how to administer and score this efficient tool. Oral Reading Fluency Screenings, such as DIBELS or Aimsweb provide data as to whether a student is on track for meeting the next literacy stepping stone. The Diagnostic Decoding Survey provides data to show whether a student’s confusion comes from difficulty with short vowels, long vowels, multi-syllable words, etc. With this data, teachers can plan informed and targeted instruction to meet the needs of all students. (Grade Level: 1-12) Register Now for Session 1

January 28 - Session 2: Word Study: The Art of Decoding Multi-Syllabic Words
As students develop their reading ability, they need to notice word parts, or orthographic chunks, to help them decode unknown multi-syllabic words. For some students this is quite easy and natural; for others, it is a daunting task. In this session, learn more about the six basic syllable types and participate in effective strategies, which will improve your students' decoding skills. (Grade Level: 2-8) Register Now for Session 2

February 11 - Session 3: Building a Word Conscious Classroom - Vocabulary Instruction
Vocabulary plays a critical role in learning to read and supporting comprehension. Readers should be explicitly and indirectly taught new vocabulary words within the context of their reading. Learn how to select Tier Two words, define words quickly while reading, and interact and use new words after reading. Strategies to increase word consciousness in your classroom or school will be provided. (grade Level: K-8) Register Now for Session 3

Instructor: Evelyn Probert. Location: PSESD-Renton. Fee: $140 for the series or $50 per session. For more information: Colleen Greytak, 425-917-7802, 253-778-7802, 1-800-664-4549 x7802, or cgreytak@psesd.org

Leadership Training in Managing Employee Misconduct & Discipline

February 24 & 25, 2010; 8:00-4:00
Registration Deadline: February 12, 2010
PSESD #: RM10MD1
School districts and school administrators most commonly respond to employee misconduct and impose discipline when a behavioral incident occurs. This situational response to a specific incident focuses on the individual and the level of discipline. It calls upon management skills and knowledge that are only intermittently put into practice and not deeply developed.

It does not have to be this way. The incident-based approach can be changed to a systemic model in which the management of misconduct and discipline is an inherent and well planned part of the dynamic and ever-present process of human capital management. It is a model in which the responsibilities and skills of managers are defined, developed, and aligned to the responsibilities and skills of a supporting human resource professional. A systemic approach will build organizational values and expectations, lessen the occurrence of behavioral incidents, and place the manager in a more effective and more supported position to carry out and successfully defend the discipline when necessary.

This training is designed to provide school administrators with the essential skills and abilities to prevent and when necessary-receive, investigate and act on complaints of employee misconduct. The training program will address the following critical components of a successful program to control employee behavior and manage employee discipline:

  1. The Human Resource Model
  2. Discipline Process Overview
  3. Case Law
  4. Special Misconduct Situations
  5. Effective Investigations
  6. Decision and Choice of Discipline
  7. Discipline Notice Content and Requirements
