Wikibooks: Free Textbook Project

Here is one of those ideas I want someone to use in a classroom and report back to me how it worked: Wikibooks are free, open content textbooks. The site contains over 50 textbooks in various stages of development, as well as links to other wiki references. Users, that is anyone with a desire, can read, edit and write the texts. What’s a wiki? A website that is editable by anyone. There is real appeal

to using a Wiki with students as a resource for them to create and share ideas (it’s a great way to create community). However, I’m skeptical about the reliability of a wiki textbook. Where’s the editorial control? Would you trust your students’ learning to random Wiki editors? While the idea of free is appealing, I wouldn’t start disbanding the textbook selection committee just yet.
